FGCU Triathlon was the first attempt at a triathlon by the students at Florida Gulf Coast University and it was a fine first attempt.

The Pre-Race Nerves

As usual, I had a slight case of pre-race nerves. I treated this race as I would a long bike ride and tried not to get nervous but a you can tell by the picture below I was late to the start and nervous!

This was Tony 171’s first attempt at a sprint triathlon – 1/4 mile swim, 11 mile bike and 3 mile run. Andrew rides with the Flatlanders from Band Ass coffee on Saturday and is a regular at sprints.

Angel and me at the start said she was only going 80% for this race – yea OK.

The Swim

The start was a wave start with my wave starting 3 minutes behind the “younger” male athletes. The first buoy was off to an angle left so everyone felt jammed together. I stayed left and ran until I couldn’t run then started my swim. It must have been the excitement of the start or the run into the water but with in a minute I felt my heart rate was to high and my breathing out of control. I tried to calm down and focus on my swim and breathing properly. As I turned at the buoy I was a little out beyond the buoy as I was trying to stay out of the fray of the other swimmers. After the turn I just tried to concentrate on the next buoy. At the half way point the faster girls began to overtake the old slow men and it was a mad house with people swimming over top of one another, getting kicked and punched. I don’t remember turning at the next buoy . Angel got kicked in the face and lost one of her goggle eye pieces. As I exited the water I was right behind Angel.
