Rear View – A Weekend MicroAdventure

1 Feb

This weekend didn’t see much in the way of training as it has been cold in the mornings, well cold for Florida.  I guess I’ve been here to long because 50* seems to cold to do anything.

For sometime I have been following Alastair Humphreys blog.  He suggests that we do MicroAdventures each month. I wrote about it here and you can check out his blog here. So I suggested to my friends, a gang of 8, that we do a MicroAdventure just not overnight like Alastair. So Sunday was the day for our big adventure.

Our community has canoes, kayaks and row boats for the residents to use on the Estero River.  Our community is across the river from Koreshean State Park and the Estero Bay Preserve State Park.  The river winds its way through the mangroves and empties into the Estero Bay. Just about a mile across the bay is Mound Key, which is an archeology site that once was used by the Caloossahatee Indians who lived here from 500 to 1750 ad. It’s a place that I have wanted to visit since I moved here but never could.

The Gang of 8 before the trip

It was a slightly overcast day with light winds and about 70*, so I felt it was a perfect day for a kayak trip out to Mound Key, about five miles downstream and across the bay.

On the Estero River going through the perserve.

We wound our way downstream through the preserve and finally to the Estero Bay.

North side Mound Key landing.

Once we arrive it was time for our picnic.  An overturned kayak made a great table.

Once lunch was done it was time to explore the island which is the highest elevation in Lee County.

Then the long paddle back and some much need adult beverages around the fire pit.

What a great MicroAdventure.
